An airport for Koh Phangan
Talk of an airport to be built on Koh Phangan has been in discussion for some time now, the location is still not clear and no announcement has been made. However it is known that an aviation report for Koh Phangan has been carried out and approved. Furthermore two sites on Koh Phangan have been surveyed and given the all clear for an airport to be constructed on the land. An airport will bring increases in land values, tourism and prosperity on Koh Phangan and certainly real estate developers will be more interested in land and house projects and property on Koh Phangan.
One possible location is near Chaloaklam in the north of Koh Phangan were the contours level out on elevated land some two hundred meters above sea level. It would be a tight fit to lay the required three kilometers of runway needed to land a aircraft and the looming Khao Raa to the east, one of the highest mountains on Koh Phangan will also cause a problem for the engineers. There is also the Chinese temple located to the east of the site that might deter construction but there is little other property in the area. Since the aviation regulations require aircraft to take off and land from either the north or south, a runway in this location is doubtful.
Location two is Hingkong on the west coast of Koh Phangan, the land is very flat here and the sea very shallow. Talk is they plan to reclaim the land from the sea to create enough room for the runway. An offshore island here is also a possibility although such a project would surely impact the marine ecology.
