Nestled up in the North of the island is Chaloklum Village a famed fishing settlement which although now has some good hotels and resorts, the fishing industry still plays a significant role. The village is an established place with its own seven eleven mini mart, video rental shop, pharmacy, several ATMS and a wide selection of restaurants.
The village also has a large pier that receives fishing boats, fisheries in the village proccess the fish and often send it on to the mainland or neighbouring Samui. There are a few reliable places to purchase fresh seafood that arrives into Chaloklum each morning. The fishmongers at the back side of Sail Rock Divers is probable the best place to try first as they get a regular supply from the longtail boats that moor up opposite on the beach. Another good supplier is located next to sheesha bar which is nearly always processing large quantities of squid each morning.
The main street is parallel to the ocean and along the road are several Thai and western eateries, try Peang Restaurant or Nong Nook for Thai dishes and The Italian pizza man for an authentic pizza.
Another activity is the elephant trek located just outside of Chaloklum, towards Thong Sala that offers rides on elephants up the mountain where some scenic views can be found and a better look of the jungle habitat. Opposite the trek is the Phangan Archary club where you can get some practise and have fun shooting arrows with classic bows. A crazy golf course is also located in the village near the Seven Eleven store.
