The inside reef makes for easy safe snorkeling and equipment can be hired or purchased locally. The lotus dive shop is a good stop for all your diving needs, situated in the reggae village, just ask for Tony, who organizes dive trips to sail rock, the marine islands, Koh Toa and more, an extensive array of dive courses is on offer. They also sell standard snorkels at all the shops and resorts in Haad Salad which are good for use on a short holiday stay. Care must be taken not to stand on the coral when out snorkeling as this can deplete the coral formations. The corals are also sharp so be careful if attempting to hold on to coral boulders.
Kayaks can be rented at several places and at the end of the beach wind surfers and small sail boats are also for hire. Koh Phangan is not ideal for windsurfing or even sailing as most of the time the weather is very calm and little winds exist. Haad Salad Bay is shallow, a few meters at most so when the winds to pick up it becomes a good place to learn to windsurf or sail.
There are many boat trips collecting people from the beach that go to Thaan Sadet and Thong Nai Paan, contact booking points along the beach. Mr Nat also does VIP boat trips in a neo-classic white roofed long tail boat which is not as long so only goes on shorter trips to Koh Ma. The sea is generally very calm and a trip out in a boat can be a like a ride on a lake on many days, snorkeling from the boat is a fantastic way to get some privacy and see some aquatic scenes. There is little of harm in the ocean, sea urchins should be watched out for but there are not many and no other issues when in the water. Swimming at night is not advisable as there are some fishing boats moored along the beach which may not be seen when swimming.
Lilo's, beach balls and frizbies are all great fun in the shallow waters of the bay, allowing sports to be played in waist deep water. At certain times of the year a sand bank emerges in the center of the bay surrounded by water which can be used for football for the energetic ones, which often turns into water ball as the tide comes in. There are few currents in the bay, avoid the fishing boat entrance except when snorkeling out as this is one of the few places a weak current my occur.
