Visiting the temples brings an appreciated for the Buddhist monks, their religion and the work they do for the community. There are many temples on Koh Phangan within and around the villages on the island as they play a role in daily life. A few historic wats and temples that date back over 300 years and are still in original condition on Koh Phangan.
Temples in Thailand are a flash with color and gold leaf, integral hand work and classical architecture and make for interesting viewing. The monks are always welcoming to visitors and many will give a short guided tour with a friendly chat, a small donation at the end is well received.
Please remember to always dress respectfully when visiting a temple, flip-flops should not be worn unless they have a back to them and long two users are better then shorts, string tops for girls should be avoided as well.
On the south shores of Koh Phangan at Ban Tai village Wat Pho offers a superb herbal log fired steam sauna that can reduce high cholesterol and help with skin conditions. Enquire in the village about opening times and directions.
The hillside cave temple of Wat Khao Tham and meditation retreat not far from Wat Po, has excellent views over the coconut plantations of Ban Tai, dress respectfully.
An interesting place to visit to pear back into the past of Koh Phangan, Wat Nai is over 400 years old, the oldest temple on Koh Phangan and is also located in Ban Tai. The original srivichaiya architecture of the 9th to 13th Century still remain there today.
Founded over fifteen years ago after a vision that came in a dream to Ms Malawan, the Chinese Temple of Kuan Yin Shrine sits in beautiful harmony with the hills over looking Chaloklum Bay. In the highest room at the shrine the statue of Kuan-Yin, the goddess of mercy can be found.
