For arrivals in Bangkok there are a few options on how you can get to Koh Phangan, by flight, train or the more affordable bus network. Either way your trip will end with a boat crossing from Koh Samui, Koh Toa or Surratthani as Koh Phangan doesnt have an airport, yet.

Air travel to Koh Phangan

The domestic terminal at Bangkok Airport serves as a national hub to over 14 provincial airports with daily flights. The schedule to Koh Samui is one of the busiest flight paths along with Chaing Mai and Koh Phuket Bangkok airways have twenty five daily flights to Koh Samui and are the sole carrier to the island.

The price of a one way ticket to Koh Samui is 3450 baht but expect to pay commission on top of anywhere from fifty baht and up if brought through a travel agent. They do have promotional two way tickets at 4000 baht however they can only be used on the first and last two flights of the day (with 0600, 0630, 2130, 2200 flight times).

Which ever destination you arrive at Koh Samui airport from you should take note of the boat departure times to Koh Phangan to avoid a lengthy wait for the connection. There are several companies operating ferry and high speed boats over to Koh Phangan so be sure to check the current times when booking the flight.

A more economical way to travel by air to Koh Phangan is to fly to Surratthani and take a longer boat trip lasting around two and half hours to Koh Phangan, a one way fair to Surrathani is around 2000 baht.

Train travel to Koh Phangan

Train tickets from Bangkok to Surrathani can be purchased at the Hue Lamphong train station which is centrally located in Bangkok, or they can also be brought at any of the travel agencies in the city.

The trip takes around twelve hours and most people prefer to ride the sleeper train overnight to Surrathani. Several classes are available from basic seating to fan or air conditioning with a bunk to first class private cabins that can sleep two. Tickets for second class air conditioned carriages cost below 700 baht and a first class carriage is 1100 baht (one way).

From the train station at Surat bus and boat combination tickets can be brought at around 400 baht for the connection to Koh Phangan.

Bus travel to Koh Phangan

Bus operators to Koh Phangan mainly operate from the Khoa Sarn road area in Bangkok as the price of a ticket through to Koh Phangan can be as little as 300 baht which suits the traveler budgets on this road. These buses are run purely for tourist and rarely will Thai people use them to travel down to the island, government busses are also available at the Bus Station in Bangkok.

The journey is smooth for the most part and theres no constant stoppages as one experiences on the trains however the space to move around in a bus is considerable less then that of a train.

The bus will bring you straight to the pier for the connecting boat to Koh Phangan.
